Happy New Year!

Wishing you all a happy new year out there! I started this blog just under six months ago now and it's continuing to grow and thrive. Ultimately, what I want to ask you for now, is to let me know what you want to see more of, what I should give a miss and if you enjoy a post I really want you to tell me about it! So I'm enabling comments. There are also the little tick boxes at the bottom of each post so you can simply click your response to a post.
Thanks again for all your support, and don't forget, you can follow me on Twitter, like me on Facebook and tell your friends about me!

Von Follies by Dita Von Teese

I've been meaning to write about this for weeks. I'm so excited! Target went a little quiet with its designer ranges for a while there, and I'm glad to see its range coming out. Hell, if Dita was releasing a high priced range in Australia I'd still be all over it like glitter on glue.
The range will be release nationally in early February, so it's a little over a month away now. But the good thing is that the range will be added to in March and April.
Sizes are also coming in a big range with Bras going to an E cup size and briefs coming up to size 20.
Also to make sure that everyone in Australia has access to the range it will also be available to buy online! It's good to see Target stepping into the online shopping arena.
Can't wait! It'll be worth staying up late to be first in on the net.

Bought! DIY Pillow by Sportsgirl

Make your own embroidered cushion by Sportsgirl x Beci Orpin

Beci Orpin put together some cute stuff for the Sportsgirl Gift ideas table this year and this kit was part of that. This was probably my bargain of the day from Boxing day, their price started off at $29.95, but in the sales I picked two of them up for $6.65 each! I wasn't going to pay full price for them before Christmas but I had to stop myself a few times in fear they would sell out. Basically it's an 'embroider your own pillowcase' kit, Kind of nana-ish I know but didn't you know that DIY is awesome? I've been sitting on the couch while my boy plays video games for the last few nights trying not to stab myself in my fingers. But it's looking good so far. The kit comes with everything you need with needles, embroidery thread in a range of colours and the cushion insert (fun to lug around on boxing day!) but I'm going to go one step further and insert zips into my covers

The Project in process, I picked up the embroidery loop from Lincraft for a couple of bucks and recommend anyone with this kit do the same.

Boxing day 2011 sales wrap up

So I shopped, and shopped, and shopped some more, what else would you expect of me really? Here's what I thought, there will be posts later of what I bought, but I'm pleased with my bargains. I didn't post yesterday purely out of exhaustion. I shopped, til I dropped.
One of the things every one who worships at the alter of the credit card needs to experience in their lives is to be in the crunch of people waiting to get into Myer or David Jones on boxing day. Hilariously the news-people filmed the outside entrance where no one really lined up, while people were milling around the indoors entrance to Myer for a good hour before it opened. I know, because I bypassed the crowd and went to find other shops that were open instead! Kind of disappointed they weren't open before 9, but I found early bird bargains elsewhere too.

In the city and Carindale I went to the following:

Dotti: Picked up some cute gear from their gift table, but other then that they have some good mark downs on clothing, good to refresh your wardrobe for summer.
Lorna Jane: Finally! I stalk Lorna Jane for cheap clothes because I can never quite justify the full price. Not as large a markdown as I like but still a lot more affordable with tights and older collections getting a good price chop. Full piece Malia Swimsuit for half price? Yup, nice one.
Forever New: Also good for having a pick over their gift table, I wanted one of the gorgeous bird print suitcases but they hadn't been marked down *sadface* my god wouldn't that have been fun to lug around during sale time!
Myer: The big one, it's certainly best to go to the first day of sales for Myer because they have all kinds of extra one day only sales on top of the rest of their specials. Gift packs were awesome, but in my opinion the clothing sale will only get better so I'll come back with fresh eyes after new years.
Sportsgirl: I didn't actually think they were going to improve on their pre-Christmas sale but I was wrong, They had all sale items marked down an extra 30%, and added all their gift-ware too, very nice. Though my experience was sullied by the occurrence I have noted in the last paragraph ...
Diva: Disappointment of the day, but I suppose I'm so used to the epic boxing day sales they normally have that this seemed really sub-par. I think barely a fifth of their stock was marked down, and none of it was the decent stuff, just what was marked down a few months back (I lie, they did add their Christmas gift stock). I seems that all they really did was stick up sale signs. No purchase.
Lovisa: Have marked down more of their stuff, there's some good stuff if you have a trawl, different stuff has been marked down compared to the recent sale so it's worth a look.
Alannah Hill: No real difference to pre-Christmas, but there's still lots of stock available. I think they'll have to mark down further if they want to move it by February.
David Jones: Impressive, lots of good solid mark downs, but lots of stuff that gets wheeled out for every sale too. If you keep to the shelves there's some good bargains. I noted that in among the Mimco handbags they had marked down bags that weren't on sale in the Mimco shops.
Mimco: Not a big improvement on prior to Christmas at all really, they say they've added more stock to the sale but I couldn't tell.
Peter Alexander: The one store I took a look at, look at the throng of people shopping and went 'F this!' and fled. Must've been good! Lol. I think I'll be shopping that sale from the safety of my armchair. Looking online it is good, Peter are known for having sales rarely, but when they do, they're epic.
Target: Faithful, well stocked Target. Good savings across the store, I had a good look at homewares, clothes and leftover Christmas decorations, alas, no fairy lights still available @_@. I recommend having a look at kitchen drapery, and classic clothing items,

One last point for anyone, for the love of god, leave your kids at home! (supervised of course, what are grandparents for?) I spotted one little girl in absolute tears because her mother had ditched her out the front of Sportsgirl because the girl had reached the end of her patience for following mum around all day. And FFS(!) it's fun enough trying to haul your shopping around without having to dodge people with strollers who think they have right of way!

Merry Christmas!

Totally chiming in a little late as far as Australia is concerned but I'm sending out a Merry Christmas to our readers. I know I ate more then my share of turkey today. Yummmm.
Stay safe everyone! and I hope you had a great day whatever you were doing!

Birdette's sales shopping list

Forgive me for a post that probably seems more then a little self indulgent, but if you know where I recommend to go and buy these things for the best price and quality, really I'm helping you!

Sports underwear: For variety of sizes, range and price, Big W wins hands down. I have a bra size that sits out of common sizes nowadays, massive pain in the ass but they cater to this, the Triumph range comes in reasonable prices that get even better when they're on sale, and the cotton G-Strings made by Rio are the best knickers for hiding under tights.

Sports tights: Can't go past Lorna Jane, yeah they're not as cheap but my god they're flattering. Because their sizes tend too run a little big you're more likely to find a size to fit you, and I find the waistbands don't give you a bad muffintop (if any).

Kimono jacket: Those lovely easy breezy slip-ons are everywhere, but I like the style at Cotton On, they have a nice range of prints and price is good too.

This is merely just a snippet of what's on my list, but I'm dying to get out into the throng of it today!

Bought! Zetta tote by Mimco

Totally stoked that this bag finally went on sale a few days ago, I swooped in early enough and it is ideal! Great size, durable, nice detailing and a detachable shoulder strap. It's not leather, but I wanted a nice tough bag that I didn't have to worry about getting wet.
$119 down from $199! I'm glad I waited.
There are stacks of other bargains to be had at Mimco too, and if you're a member they're giving you a 30% off everything else in the store that hasn't been marked down TODAY ONLY. Worth going to the mall just to check it out in my opinion.

Loving this week: Issa x Havaianas collaboration

I'm not a fan of thongs but these are some incredibly cute designs, Havaianas have been working with Daniella Helayel of the Brand Issa London to create this range of thongs, (Issa being one of Kate Middleton's favourite brands.) Featuring heart and spot motifs, The contrasting fluorescent straps are spot on in trend for the summer and the quirky prints are subtle and cute.
Major <3. Last minute Christmas idea anyone?

Whatever happened to Boxing Day sales?

The pre-Christmas sales ate them, that's what! So many places have already started their sales it's ridiculous. There will be no difference between now and boxing day in the majority of stores, and I predict that the department stores are the only ones that there will be any difference (weather the difference is notable is another matter)
What this does mean for you is that if you haven't been out into the stores with your boxing day budget already, you best get into it! Here's just a small selection that I have found notable.

Review: 20% off new stock, and up to 50% off everything else.
Sportsgirl: Half of the stock looks to be marked down, I've picked up things up to 70% off before in their sales.
Portmans: Same goes for Portmans, truly worth going through.
Mimco: up to 50%, I bought a handbag from there today and the clerk told me she was surprised it was marked down as this type of bag never gets marked down ... bonus!
Alannah Hill: Up to 50% off
Cue: Up to 50% off

Can't handle the crowds? (They are pretty massive already!) Most of these shops have online counterparts but don't forget to check out ASOS marked down up to $50 off thousands of items. I've put an order through already.

Stores to check on Boxing day?

Diva: $5 racks galore, good god yes please!
Myer: Not one for the faint hearted, go alone, or take someone to hold your spot in the lines!
Kikki K: Up to 50% off

Splurge v Steal: Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat & L'Oreal True Match Touche Magique

Illuminating concealers are a brilliant make-up items found in beauty around the world and these two are my favourites, I use them under my eyes and around my nose to help reflect light and brighten up tired and dull skin as required, they do not conceal per se, but rather are useful in the fight against eye bags and for highlighting.
Try dabbing them on at the just above the middle of your lips (just above the cupid's bow) to make your pout look fuller. Otherwise along the top of your cheekbone or on your brow-bone will help your face appear more angular and slim.
The pen packaging is also very convenient, you draw it on and then tap to blend with your ring finger, they are also very compact and will fit into most make-up cases, and you can even slide them into a brush roll without any fuss.
One thing that I think Touche Eclat has over Touche Magique though is the variety of shades, Magique comes in four shades (in Aus) while Eclat comes in seven with varieties for darker skin-tones.

Book review: Meals in Heels by Jennifer Joyce

Meals in Heels by Jennifer Joyce

I have had this book since before I even started this Blog, and to me it deserves being put up on here. It is one of the books I pull down time and time again whenever I'm in the mood for something lovely to eat, or even just to get inspired to cook something new and interesting. My personal favourite is the 'Make ahead risotto with sausage, spinach and cherry tomatoes.
Jennifer is a food stylist and recipe writer based in London, so she is exposed to stacks of different dishes, ingredients and cooking styles that have worked their way into this book. The basis of the book are dishes that you would make for a dinner party, but it helps you prepare as much of the food as possible in advance so you actually get to enjoy your dinner party. It gives you prompts in the recipe instructions telling you how long in advance you should ideally be doing each step, but of course you can still make it all in one go to put on the table for a household dinner.
What sets this recipe book out from the rest of them to me is the styling. Along with each recipe there are tips on how to present it and a few other dishes in the book it would go well with. This helps immeasurably when you haven't had the chance to cook any of it before. What sort of platter should I go for? Will it fit in this bowl? Will these two dishes complement each other? They're all taken care of.
Also at the front of the book is the 'getting started' section, of course it's a great place to start with general tips and tricks to ensure your dinner party will run smoothly, with help on how much to serve per person, what will help fill them up, menu plans, and other good advice.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone looking to break out of a cooking rut and looking to start entertaining guests. Even seasoned dinner party fans are bound to pick up some help on how to make more of their meals ahead of time by adapting some of the tricks to suit their own recipes.

Bought! Bambi playsuit from Peter Alexander

Ha, I'm so glad I managed to track down and buy this gorgeous piece of sleepwear before they all sold out. I've been trying mega hard not to buy anything just for me so I can afford to buy my Christmas presents.
The fabric feels absolutely gorgeous, a blend between 30% silk and 70% cotton. so it feels quite slinky with none of the retained heat you get from synthetic satin. The print is so cute, watery coloured images of Bambi, thumper and the forest (Did I mention Bambi is one of my favourite Disney motifs?) and the lacy detail around the top just finished it off nicely.
I didn't even wrap it and put it on the tree. Had to wear it now!

Product review: Garnier Intensive 7 days Body Lotion

I picked this up in a two pack the other day to give it a go and see what I thought about it, I just can't go past a bargain without looking twice. Even though I already own several moisturisers!
I'm quite pleased with it too. I bought the Extra Dry Skin formulation with Shea Butter (a godsend for dry skin) and kept up the applications every day for a fortnight. The claim is that you can still feel the effects of the moisturiser up to 7 days after you stop using it, while I think honestly this is a bit far fetched, it is still a good moisturiser to use every day. It absorbs quickly, doesn't feel greasy, and has a light scent that won't clash with your perfume. It's a good choice for applying in the morning before you put your clothes on.

Other varieties it comes in include:
Aloe Vera for Normal Skin
Mango Oil for Dry Skin (smells just like summer!)
Honey for Dry Skin
Cocoa Butter for Dry Skin

At Priceline you can pick it up in a two pack for less then $10, Try it for yourself.

Bought! Cupcake memo pad from Dotti

Does anyone else go Christmas shopping and wind up buying for themselves as well? I'm guilty of it but I try to do it on a more 'one for me, one for who I'm shopping for' basis, but this was just too cute! I had to buy one, it was taunting me! But I know a friend who would love it just as much, So under the tree it goes.

Loving this week: The Iconic

I have a site for you all to check out! The Iconic. A fashion shop with a focus on Australian labels for men and women that we all know and love. With free shipping and a 30 day no questions asked returns? Yes please!
The Iconic is pretty new out there, only starting a few months ago but is quickly building into the place to go for Australian labels online.

Wanna peek at the wares?
I'm a fan of anything quirky, I may even have too many hero pieces in my wardrobe for my own good but I love the individual detailing of this sleeveless trench, perfect for layering in our fickle weather!

This Suboo cape is a great addition to your wardrobe, I love the print, and 100% silk means it will cover you up but still keep you cool in summer.

Sheer pieces can be tricky to style but so long as you always remember to balance them with modesty you'll be sweet. The asymmetric detail keeps it current and the panels are cut just right to show off your figure but skim any problems. This is going on the wish list.

Also if you sign up to their newsletter, you get a $10 to spend in the store, also good to be ahead of the pack for their sales and news. Check it out here.

Christmas gift ideas: Fitness Fanatic

I've tried to come up with ideas that will work for both seasoned sports girls and the ones who are just finding their feet, encouragement is a great thing, but possibly the best thing you can give a newbie is to go with them!

Under $30:
As I've previously mentioned, I do quite like a fun slogan singlet, Asana makes some good ones if not slightly in your face a times, but like I also said back then, I look down on anyone who uses the word 'chockies' (I don't care if you earn them one step at a time... chockies is a stupid word!)

Slogan Singlets $29.99 each

Under $50:
A lot of sportswear comes with pockets for your gear but not all of them do, a bum bag is one of the ways you can carry your keys and ipod. Yeah, they are a little daggy but I like this Lorna Jane one, it's flat and fashionable in a way that won't date.
LJ Bum Bag by Lorna Jane $39.99

Under $100:
I thrash the crap out of my gym bags, and they only last a few months without something falling apart on me, so I'm almost always in the market for a new one, I look at them having enough room to hold everything, looking good, having a long over the shoulder strap and some pockets to hide little things.
adidas Clima365 Team Gym Bag $59.95

Would you wear it? Prada

There are times when I look at what is coming down the catwalks at the big elite fashion shows and can't help but laugh out loud. I think that sometimes they're just trying to come up with the most ridiculous look possible for us to emulate so we can claim we're in fashion, when all we actually do look like is utterly insane and stupid. Take these for example:

Have you ever seen a more WTF moment in fashion? And seen people actually wanting to buy them? Kooky sunnies are OK but who would be caught dead in these?

Another curveball for our sense of fashion? why yes, here we have another pearl from Prada.

No .... just no.

Christmas gift ideas: Girlie girl

For starters, I would assume that this particular friend of yours is partial to looking and keeping her house in a girlie manner?

Under $30:
This Bunny ring dish is adorable, it reminds me of Thumper from Bambi.
Ring dish $24 from Have You Met Miss Jones

Under $50:
I love this key hook and have it in my mind to buy it for myself too! don't think that renters can't put it up either, some of those temporary picture hooks will hold this up nicely!
Brass Key Hook $45 from Prue Trollope

Under $100:
The gleam of an Alannah Hill bag waiting in your hand is enough to make most girlie girls squeal. Alannah has a range of accessories that will do the trick nicely, I really love this belt, it will complete a simple dress perfectly.
Hello Sailor Girl! belt $99 by Alannah Hill

Christmas gift ideas: Crafter

The problem is with some crafty types that sometimes they stick to their niche and don't really stray from that. There are stacks of crafty activities; knitting, sewing clothing, scrap-booking, card making, crochet, quilting, pottery, even glass-work. So I'll try to come up with ideas that will cross a wide variety, but even then, you may end up poking them into something they love with a gift a bit to the left of what they're already into.

Under $30:
One major problem that I find that comes with being crafty is that it is damn messy! and I never have enough space to put everything, looking into what sort of craft they do and finding a suitable storage solution to what they already do will be infinitely appreciated. Little plastic sets of drawers are great for papercrafts, while storage portable suitcases are good for sewing, Even tackle baskets are awesome for sewing bits and pieces.

Under $50:
Updating your friends stock of tools she uses is another good idea. as I often don't even realize that the needle I've had in my machine is about 5 projects old, and I didn't even realize that I shouldn't use the same pair of scissors to cut both fabric and paper for a long time. Buying them a new set of scissors, a new crochet hook set (and roll to keep them in!) can prove invaluable.
Another idea is to book them into lessons in a craft that they have mentioned in the past, but this is a tricky one, you need to have listened really carefully, and maybe even stalked their google history!

Under $100:
This present can seem a bit nana-ish, totally get that but so can half of crafty activities when you think about it, I still get called a babushka for my willingness to sew my nieces and nephews presents (FFS! it's cheap and chips and really personal, what's wrong with that??) So I'm going to suggest a Cuttlebug machine, or if they already have one, some  stencils for it. It's worth hunting on the internet as they come in a wide variety of sizes, big shot are sturdy and can cut more materials, Cuttlebugs are your go to user friendly machine, there are other ones and if you're really confused, find yourself a shop assistant or online forum to see what other people think.

The cost per wear theory

Ever needed to justify that immense amount of money you dropped on something spectacular? I get that sounds completely insane but listen to me for a minute.
Imagine you have found the perfect handbag, you can use it everyday for work, the perfect go with anything colour and it fits everything you need. The only problem is that it comes with a not so perfect price-tag, in fact it's reaching up into almost a grand. (Or more, could always be more!)
How often do you think you would use the bag, possibly you would use it 4 times a week, for three years? That would calculate into 624 wears. You divide the full price by the amount off times you predict you will wear it, so $1000 divided by 624 means it will cost $1.60 for each time you wear it!
Suddenly that classic supple leather is justified right? It can get a little hazy but if you stick to classic styles and items that will be worn often it can help your wardrobe acquire some truly special pieces.

Christmas gift ideas: Fashion fiend

The ultimate for this and for all price ranges is to buy them a gift card for their favorite store, you let them choose, you know it will get used, and even better, they'll put it to good use during the sales! It's what I ask for every year.

Under $30:
A good accessory can make an outfit, and even better is when you get an item that looks expensive, without the redic price tag. Diva can be a little hit and miss, but if you have a sharp eye you can find some excellent buys, take this Diva cuff, it's perfect for summer, it will work for beachy, boho and ethnic looks and that's just off the top of my head.
Diva Cuff $16.99

Under $50:
What I love about this jewellery box is hat the clear perspex you can see exactly what is in there before you get into it, helping you plan your outfit in a quicker time.
Jewellery Box by ASOS roughly $50 AU

Under $100:
Magazines subscriptions are a great option when you're not sure if someone you are buying for will like what you buy them. Choose wisely, but luckily for fashionistas there is a wide variety, I would recommend Shop til you Drop in Aus, one of my favourites!

Oh god no!

Office ladies out there, you know the ones, in their perfectly pressed crisp shirts, chic and professional tailored dresses and their chunky, garish sneakers ... Wait a minute!
I don't get it, I just don't. I get that you are doing it for comfort while you get to and from work, but that is when you will be seen by the most people. Do you really want to potentially meet new clients, bosses or boyfriends like this? No matter how groomed your hair is, perfectly applied your make up is, how immaculate your suit is, No one with an iota of fashion sense is going to think you're a well presented person. You might as well wear uggs!
I just can't understand why you don't just wear some cute ballet flats instead. At least that way you still maintain that professional edge while you trapse about town in comfort. A pair of leather flats can look just as chic as heels, and when you feel like that added boost of heels you can still switch them!

Christmas gift ideas: Make-up Addict

I'm a fond believer that when you buy someone a gift, it shouldn't be something they need so to speak, but something they want, or something they would never buy for themselves.

Under $30:
Case in point, I can't often justify buying MAC products when I know that a lot of cheaper products do the same job just as well (don't shoot me ladies, there are a lot of things MAC does better then anyone, colour variety in foundation for one?) But I do like to take care of my brushes, so I'd buy this as a special little something for my make up addicted friends to have on their counter so they can keep their brushes in top condition!

Brush cleaner by MAC $20

Under $50:
Had a moment at the baby shower last weekend where we had a game, and whichever group came up with 6 lip-glosses or lipsticks first won. I managed to win for my team in two seconds flat by emptying my handbag onto the floor. I thought everyone carried around multiple options??
Every Christmas a lot of brands bring out beautiful lip gloss kits (that I looooooove to snap up on Boxing day for cheap!) Here are my picks.
Benefit make amazing Lip gloss, its applies well, and doesn't stick your lips together. A set of six to last you forever? Yes please.
Benefit Glossytown $26 (on-line)

Not to be forgotten is Clinique's gorgeous set, SPF  15+, great colours, and a cue little pouch to keep essentials in your purse.
Clinique long last shine Gift set ($49)

Under $100:
If you feel like going all out for your make up fiend, my ultimate would be to buy them the Urban Decay Book of Shadows. Of course, it's a total pain in the ass because there are no stockists (that I know of) in Australia so you're stuck buying it on eBay. However, the response I got from a friend of mine last year when she unwrapped it, wow, her boyfriend was cut as because she squealed over my gift and not his! This year the palette is really wearable with a lot more neutral shades, if you're going to buy it, buy it now because you want to make sure it will ship here in time! It also features a powerful mini speaker keyring, and QR codes that link your phone up to demos on the shadows! High tech stuff ladies...
Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV $64 (USD) Additional speaker and phone not included.

Another option if you don't feel like dealing with online bullshit would be this brush kit by Napoleon Perdis. He makes fantastic brushes an the kits are a great way to buy them, also, note that  maake up fiend can never, ever have enough brushes!
Napoleon Luxe Ultimate brush set ($99)

Napoleon Luxe Basic Brush set ($69)

Loving this week: Wrap kit by Kikki K

I am a massive fan of creating inviting and awesomely wrapped gifts, crisp paper, shiny ribbons, all topped off with a cute gift tag. Sitting under the tree for Christmas, (Can you tell I'm really in the mood?)
Not everyone has the time to go out and go through Spotlight to pick up separate bits and bobs to create beautiful and coordinated packaging, so here is a great package to pick up from Stationery store Kikki K. It comes with cards, tags, stickers, strings for wrapping, some paper, a tree stamp and more. Otherwise, it's a good starting point for putting together a kit of your own? It's often a mad dash to the shops to buy a card, or get some ribbon or some other final touch really isn't it? Set up a kit, I keep mine in a vintage suitcase!

Christmas gift ideas: Foodie friend

It's just over a month away guys! It truly is the time to start feeling festive, get into it and start planning what you're going to buy for whom. Hopefully you have a little dosh up your sleeves? I certainly don't but it won't stop me from finding thoughtful gifts!
This post is for your friends and family who love to be in the kitchen, hopefully their repotior involves more then sandwiches?

Under $30:
I wish I could justify buying another set of measuring cups because these are too damn cute! Inside stacking matryoshka dolls, perfect use and display, they also come in owls!

Matryoshka Measuring Cups available from Typo

Under $50:
Ice cream machine have always been one of those frivolous items that cost too much to justify, so when I spotted this cute as candy red machine for $30, I knew I had to buy one! Or two... I can't see myself buying one to give and not picking one up for myself.

Under $100:
Yes, I am quite partial to Tupperware (I'm a retro housewife at age 24, sigh). This is one of their indispensable items, use it to obliterate anything that really needs to be chopped into tiny pieces. Minced onion? Done. Puréed anything? Give it a whirl. Easy dips? Yup yup! I gave one to my mother in law for Christmas last year, She wasn't impressed when she opened it, but once she used it, she raved about it!
Now because you are likely to require a whole Tupperware party to buy one, I'd suggest you just get on eBay and buy one instead.

P.S If you have any other people genres for me to try and give ideas for let me know, I hope to do more then a few of these posts up until Christmas!

Product review: Hissyfit Flawless Face

Got this for free when I bought Hissyfit's Saving Face the other day at David Jones. But unfortunately I'm finding it kinda gives you a ghost face, I was asked by someone who didn't think I usually wore make-up if I was wearing make-up when I first wore this. Though the product was effective as keeping shine at bay I just couldn't get past the very pale colour. I have tried it a little more sparsely since that first day but have found it doesn't have a desirable level of shine stopping power without a heavier cover.
There is another darker colour, but I find this is too dark for my tone, it could be used as a bronzer though
I think ultimately I'll just have to put it aside and bring it back for winter when I am actually that pale and it won't wash me out quite so much.
So Birdette's ultimate thoughts? So long as you have a very light skin tone, or a tone that matches the darker shade its a great product, but if not I'd keep looking.

Why you shouldn't wear babydoll tops with low waist skirts ...

I have seen this about town and I can't help but practically shake my head in disgust. How can you not realize how pregnant this makes you look? Come on ladies! look in the mirror.
Basically it happens when you wear an empire line top tucked into a skirt, sometimes, only sometimes when you pair it with a very high waisted skirt it works alright because it doesn't poof up around your middle.
Want to know the trick to tell if you'll look OK,when you have your outfit on? Reach your arms over your head and then bring them back down. Does it poof out around your tummy? Yes? Then FIX IT! Change your top, or put on another skirt or trousers, if it looks good untucked then don't tuck it. but Please, you have no need to look preggers when you are not.

Loving this week: Greeting stamps by Kikki K

These totally saved my ass today, over the last year or so I have slowly been collecting various stamps, a lot of them are from Typo but I also splurged and bought this set from Kikki K. Handy as.
I had a baby shower to go to and realised that the gift bag I was going to use didn't come with a card, so I cut up some card from a shopping bag and attacked it with this stamp set, congratulations does the job nicely as well as a few other cute animals and birds I've bought. Instant greeting cards. Certainly something I'd recommend adding to your home-made kit.

How to Hair: Serena Van Der Woodsen's Ponytail

My recent post for an easy bad hair day solution was pretty popular so I'm going to talk you through another favourite and easy hairstyle of mine. It's a very chic up-do that looks great on everyone.
On Gossip Girl, Serena has an iconic hairstyle. Blake Lively looks fabulous and instantly done when she puts her hair up, (but wouldn't we all if we had hairdressers on our beck and call?) It's actually quite easy to do at home too.

Step one: If hair is a little on the dirty side spray some dry shampoo through it, and if it's clean, apply some mousse and blow-dry upside down, this will give the hair some texture to play with.

Step two: Without brushing too much, pull hair back into a ponytail at the lower crown of your head, about halfway down the back of your head. You don't want it to look smooth, it if is looking a bit too smooth, rake your fingers from your face, back to the pony to rough it up a bit.

Step three: Rough up the pony a bit by getting a few chunks of it and teasing with a tail comb, spray the pony and make sure it still works as one piece, not a strange tangle.

Step four: Pull aside a small bit of the ponytail and wrap it around the hair-tie to hide it, then pin in place, for a hard to spot job, pin underneath the pony, and aim the pin back into the pony.

Step five:  Mist with hairspray to finish.

All you need is a pair of bold earrings or a statement necklace and you've got a 'done' look in no time at all.

What styles do you do to look done in a hurry?

Bought! Chimera underwear set by Pleasure State

I adore upmarket lingerie labels, La Perla, Agent Provocateur, The names make me smile and make me dream of a life where I can afford to wear them everyday. But this isn't the case and as such I wait until they go on sale, after all, lingerie doesn't have much of a fashion cycle, so long as it's flattering who cares if it's from a collection three years ago?
So I keep an eye out for times when labels like Elle Macpherson and Pleasure State go on sale, if you jump in early enough you can still get a great range of sizes still available and have a high chance of getting a full matching set at a great price.
Last week I bought this amazing Chimera set at Myer, totally in love with it, bra, two pairs of knickers and suspenders. The fact it's Australian just makes it better.

Bright coloured hair tips

I posted a little while ago about this trend but not really on how to do it, I've become a real fan of it when done properly and the great thing is you can be as subtle or daring as you like, Depending on the colour and how much you apply.
A few quick tips:
-It will only really show up on light hair, so make sure you tone your hair below applying any colour, this is more important when you are going to be using colours like blue (not toning will make it green!).
-Choose a colour that will compliment, if you have balayage with dark roots choosing red and pinks are flattering, if you are completely blonde you can have more of a variety.
-If your doing this at home the easiest option is to stick to the nape of your neck and clip the rest of your hair up and out of the way of your dying, get a friend to help if you can.

Fudge make a brilliant collection of semi permanent colours that will gradually wash out call paintbox, my tips for using to is to apply to product along the length of your hair, then blast it with a blow dryer to really lock in the colour to last before letting it develop and then washing it off. I love Pretty Flamingo for a real in your face pink.
If you're after something that will wash out before you have to go to work the next day Kevin Murphy have come up with colour bugs, which you can apply to your hair and dry quickly, a bit like the hair mascara of the 90's but a much better formula.Kevin came up with the idea stemming it from make-up, why can't hair colour be as easy to apply and remove as make-up? Awesome idea. Spray with hairspray to help keep it in place and then wash out once you're ready to remove it.

Twig Ring and Bangle by Have You Met Miss Jones

I've long been a fan of Miss Jones' home wares and was very excited to see the new jewellery collection, Cute and whimsy pieces that can be layered or worn on their own. Pieces come in collections with motifs available in rings, bangles and necklaces.
My pick? I love the twig inspired collection, it's not obvious and the designs are subtle, when I fist saw them I didn't pick they were twigs. Just the sort of item that will attract oohs and ahhs when you wear them out.

Avoiding Ghost-face in photos

It's party season! And about time too. I cannot wait until Summer with some awesome cocktails and lots of chances to catch up with people that I have missed over the year. But what also comes out when you gather a group of close friends and family? Cameras.
Has anyone else ever had that annoying look in your photos where your face is paler then your body and you can't put your finger on why? It happens more at night then during the day. Guess what it is? SPF in your make-up and moisturiser.
This is because the SPF ingredients reflect the light of the flash and make you appear ghostly pale. So next time, make sure you use products that do not contain SPF, and your pictures won't come out so odd, (It's not like you need it when the sun goes down anyway!)

Bought! Eyeshadow by Maybelline and Sportsgirl Epaulettes

Just a few of the items I picked up while out shopping yesterday. I as supposed to be having an eye out for Christmas ideas but that idea quickly went down the toilet as I went along my way.
Myer was good, picked up two new summer suits by Tokito, as well as some new tops and a maxi skirt, but I'll leave those for another post.
I've been after a nude eye-shadow set to replace my utterly dead one for a while now, and Target is currently having 40% off Maybelline. What better time then to pick up one of their new Hyper Diamonds Palette? So I picked it up in ____. Three yummy tones to wear during the day, and two darker colours to dress up at night.

I also picked up another item for my slightly surreal wardrobe. When I spotted these a few months ago I thought they were awesome but wouldn't quite pay full price for them, so I watched the price drop a they were that little bit too abstract for a lot of shoppers. Oh well, their loss is my gain!
They are Epaulettes that you pin to the shoulders of a plain top to add interest. I really wish that these had come out a few years ago when the shoulder detail trend was massive, I ended up making my own to attach to a plain blazer in the end but these would've been perfect! I'm going to attach them to loose singlets and t-shirts over the coming summer and I think they'd be awesome for a festival.

Bought! Wink at me Frock by Alannah Hill

I adore finding those amazing dresses that make your figure absolutely sing. The beauty of a wrap dress is that it falls perfectly, suits a range of figures and will grow and shrink with you if you gain or lose a few.
Alannah Hill have some fantastic sale racks at the moment and I managed to pick this up for a little over $150. Yes $150 for a brand new Alannah Hill perfect dress, I thought I was dreaming! I just slip on some cute shoes that don't clash and wear a feminine hairstyle and I'm out the door.

Product review: Hissyfit Saving Face

Since I finished off my tube of Invisible Zinc I thought I'd also give a similar product by Hissyfit a go.
In short, very impressed.
Saving Face by Hissyfit is a sheer and powerful physical sunscreen that you can layer with your regular make up or wear on its own. American ratings give  it an SPF of 50+, (the reason why it's 30+ in Aus is a whole 'nother post!)
What I really adore about it is the fact that it comes in a lot more wearable shade, even for pale skin! I bought it in sand and it works well on my beyond pallid skin.I use it between my regular moisturiser and my foundation to top up my sun blocking. The texture is also quite a lot more runny, and it's easy to blend and work with, it also contains Pomegranate, Green Tea, and Australian Daisy extracts for their good for your skin benefits. I'll be more then happy to wear this by itself over the weekend too. Just enough coverage to look natural and great sun protection to boot!
Also, since I bought this at David Jones last week, the counter girls gave me a bonus full size 'flawless face' as a gift with purchase! Perfect timing, I needed a dusting powder.
