Loving this week - Tough Chic Jackets, Snobbery and Glitter Brogues

It's time to bring back an old favourite of mine, loving this week is where I tell you exactly what's made me want to run to the shops or just happy in general lately.

Firstly is this insane Jacket from the guys at Boohoo.com drawing on a stack of key trends this winter I would love to have it in my closet, I'm not sure if the peplum can actually be zipped off like the photos suggest but the way the jacket hints it can be styled in different ways really has my heart racing. Perfect for creating curves on boyish body types and at the same time the cut will flatter hourglass shapes too!

I've always loved this style of notebooks and have been filling out a book one for the better part of my life (I like to think I read a lot, in truth I do read a lot ... of magazines). It's a perfect gift idea for anyone you know who likes to go and try new gastronomical experiences, food not their thing? What about Coffee Shops or Wine or even Boutique Beers? These books are an awesome tool to help with keeping track of what was epic, and what didn't really do it for you with heaps of room to enter details such as favourite waiter, dress code and wait time.

I picked up these gorgeous newbies from a LipstikWindsor Smith Shoes Outlet in Melbourne last week and I am in love, I'm sure regular readers will already know about my penchant for sparkly shoes, and I've been hunting for a pair of brogues I like for a few seasons now. Silver glitter wingtips for $15? OMG yes please!

What's been making you smile this last week? Be sure to let me know in the comments!

Bought! Sportsgirl Cut Out Boots

So a few weeks ago I posted about some gorgeous Jeffrey Campbell Cut Out Boots that I was in love with, but just couldn't justify on my budget. Hello wallet friendly alternative!

So Mischa likes the boots too, or the camera, I'm not sure.

Can you tell I'm in love? You can pick up your own pair from the guys at Sportsgirl, I found them to be a little tight in the width, so make sure you walk about the store a bit in them first, and I certainly had to buy the bigger size my foot size normally falls into.

Guest Post - The Origins of Fashion

Hi guys, please enjoy this guest post about the origin of various types of shoes! - Birdette

A fashion boot or shoe is one that is worn for reasons other than practicality. Practical? Really?

Mary Jane’s
Mary Jane’s is the trademarked name for a closed toe ladies shoe, with a low heel and one or more strap across the top. The Mary Jane originated in the US. Mary Jane was a character in the very popular comic, Buster Brown. Buster Brown was first published in 1902, in which Mary Jane plays the love interest of Buster Brown. Later, the comic book was sold to 200 companies, including the Brown’s Shoe Company, who trademarked the name Mary Jane and Mary Jane wore Mary Jane’s in the comic strip.

Loafers
Loafer’s originated in Norway in 1930. A Norwegian shoe maker called Nils Gregoriusson Tveranger designed a shoe called the Aurland moccasin which were very popular among Europeans and eventually made its way across the Atlantic to America. The design for the shoe was picked up and replicated by a shoemaker in New Hampshire who changed the name to Loafer. The term Loafer is now the generalised term used in America to describe a slip on shoe. The traditional design of the Loafer which has a leather flap across the top was adapted in Maine by a shoemaker who renamed the shoe the Weejun.

Ballet Flat
The Ballet Flat, which is also known as the Dolly Shoe, consists of a soft shoe with minimal sole, sometimes the appearance of no sole. The Ballet flat was originally worn by men in the 16th Century when they were referred to as Pompes. Audrey Hepburn can be given the recognition for bringing the Ballet Flat to life, when she wore a pair of flats with skinny jeans in the movie Funny Face in 1957. The Ballet Flat has been adapted from its original design in order to suit the current trend, the addition of the rubber sole gives the shoe more durability and versatility and can be seen everywhere these days as one of the most popular shoes of this century so far.

Over the Knee
Over the knee boots, which are also known as cuissardes, are boots that partially or fully cover the knee. Over the knee boots can take many forms including thigh high, hip high and waders. Over the knee boots were originally designed for men, to be worn when riding a horse during the 15th Century. It became popular for men to wear tight when riding horseback in the 15th Century and so
they over the knee boot were designed to give their legs extra protection. The term bootlegging was derived in the 17th Century when men used to hide flasks in their thigh high boots. Over the knee boots were adopted by the fashionistas in the 1960’s when Balenciaga revealed an over the knee boot in their fall collection and the following season Yves Saint Laurent had included the item in his.

Knee High
The knee high boot is a highly recognisable item of clothing these days. The boot raises up to just under the knee and tend to be tight to the leg. The origins of the knee high boot date back to fishermen, stable hands, dairy workers etc., they were worn to protect the works feet from water, slurry, manure etc. The original knee high boots were slip on and were often very difficult to remove. Upon entry into the fashion world, the knee high boot was modified for convenience and zips and buckles were added.

Chelsea Boot
The Chelsea boot, also known as the dealer boot, originated in the Victorian Era and was originally worn for horse riding. Chelsea boots were considered an identifiable element of the 1960’s Mod scene, they faded out of fashion soon after that and in recent years have come back in. They are distinguishable by the thick leather sole and the elastic that runs up the side of the boot.

This Guest Post was written by Vicki Power on behalf of Duo Boots. Duo boots offer Ladies Boots in a variety of width options.

Loving this week - Summer boots, Oil and it's finally raining!

I'm a fencesitter, while you get most people who are very black and white about things I tend to find the good in both ends of the spectrum. I like cats AND dogs, Summer AND Winter. But most of all I love it when a piece that would usually be relegated to one season, can be worn in the other.
Cut out boots are going to be huge this Summer, and already there are enviable versions in store. Balenciaga have an awesome pair but not everyone can reach that price point. Here are two styles that I would love to add to my shoe rack, perfect to throw on with a summery above the knee dress. These two varieties by Jeffrey Campbell tickle my fancy. The Tripoli Cutouts almost look normal from the front but feature a sneaky cut out around the heel, while the chunky flatform of these Roscoe Cutout Boots rock my socks.

Nothing beats an oil to remove hardcore makeup. They operate on the notion that like attracts like to remove the day without stripping your skin of its natural protection. So far all of the ones I've found are just too expensive for me, So when I spotted Cleanse off Oil by MAC for $15 a bottle I figured I'd have to give it a try. Add to cart.

Lastly, it's raining.. Oh my god. It's been about 3-4 months since we're had proper rain, and the days where it's sprinkled I could count on one hand. I miss the way the world is lit with white light under the clouds, the way water runs down the window panes, and the crisp, clean scent. Snuggled on the couch with a book and a nice hot cup of tea. These are my favourite kind of days.

Bought! Typo and Sportsgirl

So now I have brought my loot home it dawns on me that I didn't really bargain hunt, but as previous posts will tell you I have a soft spot for the odd, and love to fill my house with conversational pieces. Even my laundry.

How cute is this! It's not like the same old retro style laundry buckets that you see in all the fancy-pants home stores (hell, even Aldi has cottoned on with their own range out this week ...) The miniature washing washing design won me over, and you can quickly see how much powder is in there without needing to take off the lid. Perfect. (There is also a handle, but you can't really see it with my awesome photography efforts)

Secondly, I caved in and bought the glitter booties from Sportsgirl, no, not the imitation Miu Miu's but the black ankle boots with the little heel, it's love!

Perfect amount of heel to get about it all day without pain, they go with the mountain of black opaques I get about in in Winter, Work and play appropriate, (they're used to me and my strange outfits.) And they're covered in glitter!

Have you bought anything awesome in the mid season sales? What did you get?

Loving this week: Issa x Havaianas collaboration

I'm not a fan of thongs but these are some incredibly cute designs, Havaianas have been working with Daniella Helayel of the Brand Issa London to create this range of thongs, (Issa being one of Kate Middleton's favourite brands.) Featuring heart and spot motifs, The contrasting fluorescent straps are spot on in trend for the summer and the quirky prints are subtle and cute.
Major <3. Last minute Christmas idea anyone?

Bought! Dylan Shoes by Mimco

Mimco don't just do bags! This was something I learnt earlier this year, and yes I still think that too many girls are walking around with their button bags for me too want to buy one. so I've gone for the shoes today!
After umming and ahhing over them while I had my hair done today I ended up walking back to the store and buying them as my 'congrats on your pseudo work promotion this week!' gift to myself. Partially because work is where I shall wear them the most. I love a good pair of sandals and hope these will last me more then a few years! The heel isn't really a heel but still gives me a little bit of elevation while being comfy enough to run between desks and floors for 8 hours. The hardware is silver and I am very fond of the mirror heel too!
The ladies at the store were also lovely enough to point out that I should cover the mirror up while I spray any waterproofing spray on them. good tip!

September Sales!

Truly one of my favourite times of the year, There are normally heaps of sales this month with many worthwhile discounts. Perfect time to get a head start on christmas shopping too! Here are some that I have already looked at, or plan to:

Portmans: Are clearing off what remains of their winter stock to fill with summer stock arriving frequently. A lot of the items can easily be translated into summer wear with maxi skirts, blouses and clothing that walks the line between work wear and smart casual. Great time and place to stock up on classics.

Sportsgirl: 50% off already reduced stock? Oh my god yes please! I already told you all about the great wedges I bought there on Thursday, but I also picked up a large slouchy handbag that will see me through my casual days this summer. Loving bags with two straps.

Cotton On: 30% off everything online, you only have until Monday to make use of this discount though so get on it! great chance to pick up fashion items that don't need to see you past this season.

David Jones: Great to check out and start stalking items so you can jump on them the second they have another round of discounts. My friend picked up the perfect classic pair of nude patent slingback stilettos the other day, makes me jealous I can barely balance in wedges. Lots of bargains to be had across the store, home wares, clothing, beauty, worth a look at the very least.

Cue: If you've had your eye on something, now is the time to snap it up. I haven';t had the chance to go in and check out the savings, but I know from past experience that the sales are good.

This is just a handful of what's out there at the moment, but it's a great time to stock up on your summer wardrobe. Take the opportunity while it's there.

Bought! Sportsgirl Cork Wedges

Ventured out this afternoon with a friend to go and see what we could find in the sales. After teetering around on a lovely pair of wedges at David Jones that I just couldn't balance in I thought all was lost for the day, then we went to Sportsgirl (among twenty or so other stores...)
Complete score for my go to shoes of this summer! $40! I love the seventies feel of them, and just hope I can preserve the cork effect for as long as possible.
